Taking Care of the Whole Student

Yesterday, I attended a workshop on teen mental health.  It addressed anxiety, depression, and suicide prevention.  The workshop provided us with information and a list of different wellness programs that could be instituted in schools.  I think the focus of educational professionals has always been on the overall well-being of our students.  However, with the increased incidence of mental health issues amongst today's youth, there is a need for education amongst teachers and administrators of signs of mental health struggles and what to do about them.  An increasing awareness of the importance of overall well-being and positive mental health of our students needs to be front and centre in every educational community.

The biggest takeaway from this workshop was that 25% of adolescents are currently experiencing mental health issues.  This was significantly higher than I would've anticipated.  The workshop emphasized that positive mental health is a combination of nutrition, sleep, relaxation, and exercise, all of which I would've identified immediately.  However, it also emphasized the need for goal setting, resilience, enjoyable and meaningful activities, and social communication.  I wouldn't have selected these as part of mental health.  Upon reflection, they are a large part of what makes a person well adjusted in society.

I'm looking forward to beginning my doctorate with a mental health focus.  I certainly have a lot to learn!
